Review by David Stratton: When Nawal Marwan dies in Montreal her twin children, Jeanne and Simon meet with lawyer Lebel, who explains the provisions of their mother's will. Jeanne is given a letter addressed to the father they thought was long dead, while Simon is given a letter intended for a brother they didn't know existed. Jeanne is sufficiently motivated to travel to the Middle East to try to locate her father, while Simon, at first stays behind.??Flashbacks reveal the tragic story of Nawal. This Oscar nominated French-Canadian film from writer/directorDenis Villeneuve is an adaptation of a stage play by Wajdi Mouawad, but you'd never guess its theatrical origins. Utterly gripping in its depiction of the evils of civil war and fundamentalism of any denomination, it's set in an unnamed country clearly intended to be Lebanon, as it tells its tragic yet somehow inspirational story. Filmed on location in Jordan, the dramatic events depicted are shocking at times but they offer grim insights into Middle East conflicts.
