About Sara Shaw - Originals, Blues, Jazz, Soul, Gospel, Rock, A Capella - Vocal Soloist
Having grown up with the sounds of 20’s, 30’s and 40’s jazz, Sara soon became fascinated with the intricacies and nuances of early jazz and the passion of gospel and blues singers. While her brothers were listening to Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Led Zepplin and Supertramp, Sara worked her way through music legends such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Frank Sinatra and Aretha Franklin, to Nick Cave and more contemporary artists. “Strangely I learnt music along the same time line that it was created. One just inspired me to know more about the next.”
With many local and overseas artists touring around Melbourne at the time, the inspiration was constant. Since starting her jazz quartet in Melbourne she has sung, toured and recorded originals, jazz, soul, popular, blues, gospel and rock. Being the principal organiser and singer in the 1995 USA Australian Gospel Tour, she toured with the gospel a cappella group to many of the southern black gospel churches.
“I love the fluidity and freedom of music. I must admit occasionally there’s a bit of blues or gospel that may creep into a quiet jazz number. I can’t help myself. I love the bit of punch which it can add to a song, as well as take the audience, (and sometimes the band), by surprise. I love the fact that music is a passion which everyone can relate to, whether they’re a listener or a performer.”
Sara currently performs with her own blues, soul and R&B group, the Sara Shaw Band, offers her talents as a session singer, offers singing lessons, and is frequently invited to perform jazz with Townsville jazz musicians at festivals and events.
