Everybody is invited to the Magnetic Island Dawn Service for ANZAC Day 2019 to commemorate the service and sacrifice of all Australian service men and women on Thursday 25 April, 2019.

ANZAC DAY MAGNETIC ISLAND:
04:40: Meet at the RSL Hall Arcadia for the Gunfire Breakfast
05:10: Parade Marshall assembles parade in front of RSL.
05:20: Parade marches to the Stone of Remembrance at Alma Bay.
05.30: Dawn Memorial Service commences at Alma Bay.

The march from the RSL Hall includes a contingent of currently serving members and it promises to be another memorable ANZAC Day hosted by the Magnetic Island RSL.
This is a particularly moving service and if you have not experienced it before, it is highly recommended.

ANZAC Day Breakfast will be available immediately after the service at the RSL Memorial Hall. Entertainment and Two-Up will follow. The bar will be open until 1pm.

Due to the large numbers of military personnel attending this year’s service, the general public are requested to assemble at Alma Bay on the Southern side of the Cenotaph rather than attempting to join the large march party.  Medal wearers are welcome to join the parade from the Memorial Hall.

PLEASE NOTE: If you are wanting to join the march please leave your car at Alma Bay Park and walk to the RSL Hall via Hayles Ave, as parking will not be available at the hall.

Transport on Magnetic Island
Early morning Magnetic Island Bus Service: From approx. 4.30am, and again at 5:20 am Magnetic Island Sunbus will pick up passengers (along the main road only) from Horseshoe Bay and Picnic Bay and bring them to Alma Bay.

Traveling from Townsville

Sealink are providing a free ferry service from Townsville at 4am which will be met by Sunbus at 4.30am for transport to the RSL. Sunbus will also be providing two free buses, one from Horseshoe Bay and one from Picnic Bay departing at 5am along the main road only for islanders to get to Alma Bay. Special Thanks to SUNBUS CHARTERS and to SEALINK QUEENSLAND for their invaluable support.

The Origins of the Dawn Service:
The Dawn Service observed on Anzac day has its origins in an operational routine which is observed by the Australian Army today. The half-light of dawn plays tricks with soldiers' eyes and from the earliest times the half hour or so before dawn, with all its grey, misty shadows, became one of the most favoured times for an attack. Soldiers in defensive positions were therefore woken up in the dark, before dawn so that by the time the first dull grey light crept across the battlefield they were awake, alert and manning their weapons. This was, and still is, known as "Stand To”.
