The Scarecrow Trail is back by popular demand!
The Magnetic Island (Bay Dayz) Festival competition was SO popular last year that we had to put it into the Festival calendar for 2012.
Check out over 35 scarecrows around the island and vote for your 'People's Choice' favourite. Then on Sunday 7 October we’ll be announcing the winner at the Festival Closing Party!
Scarecrow making is a terrific project for the whole family to enjoy! You don’t need to be a good artist or a good carpenter to make a great scarecrow. You just need some imagination and be willing to have a go!
A scarecrow is, essentially, a decoy, though traditionally, a human figure (or mannequin) dressed in old clothes and placed in fields by farmers to discourage birds such as crows or sparrows from disturbing and feeding on recently cast seed and growing crops.
You can make your scarecrow from anything lying around:
• Straw, wire and old clothes?
• Bricks and Besser blocks
• Old terracotta or plastic pots
• Recycled bits and pieces from your home
• Wood, plastic pipe and building off cuts
• Tin cans and old saucepans
... pretty much anything that’s close by.
What could your ?scarecrow be doing?
You could make your scarecrow ?pretty much do whatever you want:
• Taking a break in the sun
• Gardening or climbing trees
• Having a bit of fun
• Making a statement
• Telling history
• Picturing a famous person
• Are they a builder, a plumber, a baker, a ....?
