Review by David Stratton: Clint Eastwood's excellent biopic of one of the most powerful of all American public figures, J. Edgar Hoover, simply confirms the strengths of this director. Without fussy camerawork or a sensationalist approach, Eastwood and his writer, Dustin Lance Black (who also wrote MILK) assume their audience to be adult and intelligent and tell the never less than fascinating story with cool elegance. ??The events, both personal and public, don't unfold in chronological order, but it's always clear what's happening as we see the young Hoover with his mother, Judi Dench, and later creating the FBI as his own kingdom, blackmailing Presidents and other public figures. Leonardo DiCaprio is superb, as are Naomi Watts as Hoover's loyal secretary and Armie Hammer as Clyde Tolson, his deputy and closest companion.
