Review by David Strattan (At the Movies):

In this new film from Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallee, who previously made C.R.A.Z.Y. and the more conventional, THE YOUNG VICTORIA, two stories set decades apart are intertwined. In Paris in 1969, Jacqueline, VANESSA PARADIS, abandoned by her husband, raises her son, Laurent, MARIN GERRIER, who has Down syndrome.

Meanwhile in present-day Montreal, Antoine, KEVIN PARENT, a successful DJ, lives with his girlfriend Rose, EVELYNE BROCHU, and his two daughters; flashbacks show that the girls are the daughters of Carole, Helene Florent, Antoine's first love.

Dazzling and puzzling in about equal proportions, CAFE DE FLORE is a two-level film in which the two segments, different in tone and time, are mysteriously linked. A bit too mysteriously, because it may take some kind of treatise to work it all out. Carole tells her best friend she dreams of a boy who sounds like Laurent; Antoine's parent's home contains another link to the past. There are strange recurring images. It's all a bit of a mystery, and unless you can unravel it more successfully than I managed to do, it makes for a somewhat frustrating experience. Yet there's something quite haunting about the film, and perhaps more than one viewing is required to sort it all out.
